Custom ceramic mugs look simple, but most order disputes come from five details that were never confirmed in writing.
1. Capacity and size tolerance
Nominal 11oz (330ml) mugs are typically produced at full-to-brim capacity. Confirm whether the capacity is to the brim or to a fill line, and agree on a tolerance of ±3-5%.
2. Decoration method
Silk-screen printing suits 1-4 spot colors and is the cheapest. Water-transfer decals reproduce full-color artwork at a higher unit price. Laser engraving is permanent but color-limited. Gold and platinum rims use precious-metal decals and require re-firing.
3. Color tolerance
Ceramic colors shift after kiln firing. Provide a Pantone reference and accept a visual tolerance — an exact digital match is not achievable in ceramics.
4. MOQ by customization level
Custom color glaze usually starts from 3,000 pcs per color. Custom shape requires a new mould (USD 100-300) with MOQ around 5,000 pcs.
5. Packing method
Standard export packing is 6 or 12 pcs per inner box with EPE foam. Mail-order packing needs individual gift boxes plus drop-test reports for e-commerce channels.
